Common use
Videx EC (didanosine) is an antiretroviral medication prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). When you buy Videx EC online, you receive a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that works by incorporating into viral DNA during replication, causing premature chain termination and effectively blocking the action of reverse transcriptase, the enzyme HIV uses to convert its RNA into DNA within host cells. By disrupting this critical step in the viral life cycle, Videx EC helps suppress HIV viral load, preserve CD4+ T-cell counts, and slow the progression of HIV infection to AIDS. Videx EC is the enteric-coated delayed-release formulation of didanosine, designed to protect the active ingredient from degradation by stomach acid and improve bioavailability compared to earlier buffered formulations. It is used in combination with other antiretroviral agents from different drug classes for comprehensive HIV management.
Dosage and direction
Videx EC didanosine delayed-release capsules are taken orally once daily on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal, as food significantly reduces absorption. Swallow capsules whole; do not open, crush, or chew them. The dosage is determined by body weight: patients weighing 60 kg or more typically receive 400 mg once daily, while patients under 60 kg are usually prescribed 250 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with impaired kidney function based on creatinine clearance values. Regular monitoring of HIV viral load, CD4 count, complete blood count, pancreatic enzymes (amylase, lipase), liver function tests, and kidney function is essential throughout treatment.
Precautions
Before starting Videx EC HIV treatment, inform your doctor if you have a history of pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, liver disease (including hepatitis B or C co-infection), kidney problems, diabetes mellitus, gout, or any history of lactic acidosis with hepatic steatosis. Didanosine carries a significant risk of pancreatitis, which can be fatal; immediately discontinue the drug and seek medical attention if you develop severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. Monitor for early signs of peripheral neuropathy including tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet, as dose reduction or discontinuation may be necessary. Regular monitoring of serum amylase, lipase, liver enzymes, and blood counts is recommended. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment, as it substantially increases the risk of pancreatitis and liver toxicity. Concurrent use with stavudine (d4T) should be avoided due to increased risk of pancreatitis, lactic acidosis, and peripheral neuropathy.
Contraindications
Do not use Videx EC if you have a known allergy to didanosine or any component of the delayed-release capsule formulation. Videx EC is strictly contraindicated in patients with a documented history of didanosine-related pancreatitis. Co-administration with allopurinol is contraindicated as it significantly increases didanosine levels and toxicity risk. Concurrent use with ribavirin is also contraindicated due to increased risk of mitochondrial toxicity, pancreatitis, and hepatic failure.
Possible side effect
Common side effects of Videx EC didanosine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, rash, and fatigue. These symptoms are often manageable and may diminish with continued therapy. Serious adverse effects requiring immediate medical attention include pancreatitis (potentially life-threatening), lactic acidosis with hepatic steatosis (a rare but fatal mitochondrial toxicity), hepatotoxicity, peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or burning pain in extremities), retinal depigmentation, optic neuritis, and severe hypersensitivity reactions. Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension has been reported in patients receiving long-term didanosine therapy. Report any severe abdominal pain, unexplained muscle weakness, visual changes, or signs of liver dysfunction to your healthcare provider immediately.
Drug interaction
Videx EC may interact significantly with several medications. Allopurinol increases didanosine exposure and is contraindicated. Stavudine (d4T) combined with didanosine increases the risk of pancreatitis, neuropathy, and lactic acidosis. Ribavirin enhances didanosine toxicity and must be avoided. Tenofovir increases didanosine levels and requires dose adjustment or avoidance. Medications that can cause pancreatitis or peripheral neuropathy should be used with extreme caution. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, herbal supplements, and dietary supplements you are taking to prevent dangerous interactions.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Videx EC, take it as soon as you remember, provided you are still on an empty stomach and it is not close to the next scheduled dose. If it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular once-daily schedule. Do not take extra capsules to compensate for a missed dose. Consistent daily adherence is critical for maintaining viral suppression and preventing drug resistance.
Overdose
Videx EC overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, lactic acidosis, and hepatic dysfunction. There is no specific antidote for didanosine overdose. Seek immediate emergency medical attention if overdose is suspected. Treatment is supportive, and hemodialysis has limited effectiveness in removing didanosine from the body.
Storage
Store Videx EC delayed-release capsules at controlled room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius (68-77 degrees Fahrenheit), protected from moisture, excessive heat, and direct light. Keep the medication in its original tightly closed container and store out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
