Requip is the brand name for ropinirole, a non-ergot dopamine agonist that plays a vital role in the management of Parkinson's disease and restless leg syndrome (RLS). When you buy Requip online, you are choosing a well-established movement disorder medication that works by directly stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, effectively compensating for the dopamine deficiency that underlies these neurological conditions.

In Parkinson treatment, ropinirole mimics the action of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is progressively lost as dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra degenerate. By activating dopamine D2 and D3 receptors, this dopamine agonist helps alleviate the hallmark motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease including tremor (involuntary shaking), rigidity (muscle stiffness), bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Your doctor will gradually increase the dose over several weeks based on your response and tolerance, with a typical maintenance dose ranging from 3 to 24 mg daily divided into three doses. For RLS treatment, the starting dose is typically 0.25 mg once daily, taken 1 to 3 hours before bedtime, and may be increased gradually to 4 mg daily.

Do not take more than two doses of this dopamine agonist at once. Do not suddenly stop taking Requip generic without your doctor's approval, as abrupt discontinuation can cause a dangerous withdrawal syndrome characterized by fever, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, altered consciousness, and autonomic instability resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Your doctor will gradually taper the dose when discontinuation is planned. It may take a few weeks of consistent use before this movement disorder medication reaches its full therapeutic effect.



Precautions

Ropinirole may cause unusual and excessive sleepiness during everyday activities such as working, eating, talking, or driving. This can occur without prior warning signs of drowsiness. Avoid performing potentially hazardous activities that require high concentration and alertness until you know how Requip affects you. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience daytime sleepiness or episodes of suddenly falling asleep.

Sleepiness may be intensified when this dopamine agonist is taken together with cold or allergy medicines, muscle relaxers, narcotic pain medicines, sleeping pills, or medications for seizures, anxiety, or depression. This tremor medication may also cause auditory or visual hallucinations, which should be reported to your doctor promptly.

Patients treated for Parkinson's disease with ropinirole should have regular skin examinations due to an increased risk of melanoma (skin cancer). Additionally, some patients taking dopamine agonists may develop impulse control disorders including compulsive gambling, binge eating, compulsive shopping, or hypersexuality. If you or your family notice unusual behavioral changes, notify your doctor.

Check with your doctor about dose adjustment if you have high or low blood pressure, heart disease, mental illness, liver or kidney problems, or if you smoke, as these factors may affect how your body processes this movement disorder medication.



Contraindication

Requip cannot be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to ropinirole or any inactive ingredients in the formulation. Patients with severe cardiovascular disease should be carefully evaluated before initiating this dopamine agonist therapy.



Possible side effects

Common side effects of ropinirole include drowsiness, nausea (especially during initial treatment), dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, unusual weakness, stomach upset and pain, constipation, and dry mouth. For dry mouth, sucking on sugarless hard candy, ice chips, or drinking water may help. Most of these effects diminish as your body adjusts to the RLS treatment or Parkinson treatment regimen.

Seek immediate medical help if you experience difficulty breathing or moving, hallucinations, severe confusion, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Other serious side effects worth reporting include leg or foot swelling, restlessness, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, twitching, chest pain, severe muscle stiffness, vision problems, fever, or a sudden irresistible urge to sleep. If you experience orthostatic hypotension (dizziness or lightheadedness upon standing), rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.



Drug interaction

Inform your doctor if you currently take narcotic pain medicines, sleeping pills, cold or allergy medicines, muscle relaxers, or medications for depression, anxiety, or seizures, as concomitant use with Requip generic may increase drowsiness and sedation to dangerous levels.

Remember to notify your doctor about other medications for Parkinson's disease including levodopa, ciprofloxacin (Cipro) which significantly increases ropinirole blood levels, metoclopramide (Reglan), fluvoxamine (Luvox), omeprazole (Prilosec), and estrogen-containing products (Premarin, Prempro, oral contraceptives). Also disclose use of antipsychotic medications including perphenazine, chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thioridazine, and others, as these drugs may counteract the effects of this dopamine agonist and worsen Parkinson's symptoms or RLS.

Missed dose

If you forgot to take your dose of ropinirole on time, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take a double dose or extra doses if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Resume your regular dosing schedule. Missing multiple consecutive doses of this movement disorder medication may require your doctor to re-titrate the dose to avoid side effects.



Overdose

Signs of Requip overdose include fainting, severe agitation, confusion, nausea, vomiting, profound weakness, hallucinations, muscle twitching, chest pain, and tingly feeling. Seek emergency medical attention immediately if overdose is suspected. There is no specific antidote for ropinirole overdose; treatment is supportive and symptomatic.



Storage

Store Requip at room temperature between 59-86 F (15-30 C) in a tight, dark container. Protect from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep this dopamine agonist medication out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of expired ropinirole tablets properly.
