Diabetic ketoacidosis should always be treated with insulin, not oral antidiabetic agents.

Additional contraindications include: patients experiencing or recovering from severe infections, trauma, or surgery; pregnant patients (insulin is the preferred treatment during pregnancy); patients suffering from severe dehydration; individuals undergoing radiologic studies involving iodinated contrast materials (metformin should be temporarily discontinued); patients who consume large amounts of alcohol either acutely or chronically; individuals with conditions associated with tissue hypoxia such as cardiorespiratory insufficiency or sepsis; patients with severe liver disease; patients with type 1 diabetes (who require insulin therapy); and patients with very poor blood sugar control who should not rely on this biguanide as their sole antidiabetic agent.



Possible side effects

The most common side effects associated with metformin are gastrointestinal in nature: nausea, vomiting, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. These side effects are typically dose-related and often diminish over time as your body adjusts to the medication. If symptoms persist, your doctor may reduce the dose or switch you to an extended-release formulation.

A rare but serious side effect of metformin is lactic acidosis, a medical emergency characterized by weakness, trouble breathing, abnormal heartbeats, unusual muscle pain, stomach discomfort, light-headedness, and feeling unusually cold. Storage

Metformin should be stored at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F) in a dry location away from excessive heat and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. Store all diabetes medications out of the reach of children and pets.
