Common use
Glyburide is an oral antidiabetic medication from the sulfonylurea class, prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes). The active ingredient, glyburide, works by stimulating the pancreatic beta cells to produce and release more insulin into the bloodstream. Insulin is the essential hormone that reduces blood glucose levels by promoting cellular uptake of sugar and decreasing glucose production by the liver.
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body either cannot produce sufficient insulin to meet its needs or when cells become resistant to insulin's effects, preventing glucose from being properly transported out of the blood and into tissues. As a result, blood sugar levels rise to dangerously high levels, leading to long-term complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. Glyburide addresses this problem by enhancing the pancreas's natural insulin-producing capacity, helping to restore more normal blood sugar levels.
Glyburide is an effective and widely prescribed sulfonylurea that can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents such as metformin for improved glycemic control. It is available under brand names including Micronase and Diabeta. Buy Glyburide online for affordable, effective type 2 diabetes treatment with convenient delivery.
Dosage and direction
The recommended initial dose of Glyburide is 2.5 to 5 mg taken once daily with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your blood sugar response, typically in increments of 2.5 mg at weekly intervals. The maximum effective daily dose ranges from 1.25 to 20 mg, depending on the specific formulation prescribed. Higher doses (above 10 mg) may be divided into two doses taken with the morning and evening meals for more consistent blood sugar control throughout the day.
Take Glyburide at the same time each day with your first main meal to ensure consistent drug absorption and optimal glucose-lowering effect. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Never adjust your dose without consulting your doctor.
Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have any heart conditions, as Glyburide and similar sulfonylurea drugs may be associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to diet treatment alone or diet combined with insulin. Regular blood and urine tests should be performed to monitor sugar levels and overall metabolic control in patients taking Glyburide.
Follow the dietary plan and all recommendations provided by your healthcare provider, as Glyburide works best as part of a comprehensive diabetes management program. Be aware that Glyburide and other antidiabetic medications may become less effective over time due to reduced pancreatic beta cell function or worsening of insulin resistance — a phenomenon known as secondary drug failure. Report any decline in blood sugar control to your doctor promptly.
Notify your doctor if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, as Glyburide may not be appropriate during these times. Monitor for signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) — especially if you skip meals, exercise more than usual, or consume alcohol — and keep a fast-acting sugar source available at all times.
Contraindications
Glyburide is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to glyburide or similar sulfonylurea medications such as chlorpropamide or glipizide. It must not be used in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition caused by insufficient insulin that produces symptoms including nausea, fatigue, excessive thirst, abdominal pain below the breastbone, and a characteristic fruity odor to the breath. Glyburide is not appropriate for type 1 diabetes or for any patient who requires insulin as their primary treatment.
Possible side effect
The most commonly reported adverse reactions to Glyburide include nausea, bloating, heartburn, skin rash or itching, blurred vision, weight gain, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). More serious but less common side effects include hepatitis (liver inflammation), jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), and hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels).
Hypoglycemia is the most significant side effect and is most likely to occur in elderly patients, physically weakened or undernourished individuals, and especially those with liver, adrenal, kidney, or pituitary gland disorders. To minimize the risk of hypoglycemia, avoid drinking alcohol excessively, do not skip meals, take only prescribed medications, and be aware that factors such as fever, active infection, surgery, trauma, or unusually vigorous exercise can increase the risk of low blood sugar episodes.
Drug interaction
Glyburide has several important drug interactions. It must not be combined with bosentan (Tracleer), as this combination increases liver toxicity while simultaneously reducing the effectiveness of both medications. Bosentan also accelerates the breakdown (catabolism) of Glyburide in the liver, further diminishing its blood sugar-lowering effect.
Thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide (Hydrodiuril) may increase blood glucose levels and reduce Glyburide's effectiveness, potentially requiring dose adjustment. Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including: fluoroquinolone antibiotics (levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin); other antidiabetic agents; bronchodilators (albuterol); anabolic steroids (testosterone, danazol); antacids; aspirin and NSAIDs (diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen); beta-blockers (atenolol, propranolol); blood thinners (warfarin); calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nifedipine); antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol); cimetidine; clofibrate; estrogens and oral contraceptives; fluconazole; furosemide; gemfibrozil; isoniazid; itraconazole; MAO inhibitors; metformin; niacin; phenytoin; probenecid; prednisone and other corticosteroids; sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole); thiazide diuretics; thyroid medications (levothyroxine); and tranquilizers (trifluoperazine, thioridazine).
Missed dose
If you forget to take your Glyburide dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided you are about to eat a meal. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not increase your dose or take a double dose to compensate, as this significantly raises the risk of hypoglycemia.
Overdose
Glyburide overdose primarily causes severe hypoglycemia. Symptoms include pale skin, seizures, shallow breathing, coma, cold sweats, confusion, tremors, and extreme weakness. Contact emergency medical services immediately if you suspect an overdose or experience these symptoms. Administer a fast-acting sugar source (glucose tablets, fruit juice) to a conscious patient who can swallow safely while waiting for medical help.
Storage
Store Glyburide at room temperature between 59-77 F (15-25 C) in a dry place away from direct light, moisture, and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
