The typical dose is 5 or 10 milligrams taken 3 or 4 times daily.

For More Severe Schizophrenia:

Daily dosages may range from 100 to 150 milligrams, carefully titrated under close medical supervision.

Dosage for children depends on the condition, body weight, and age:

Children under 2 years of age or weighing less than 20 pounds should not receive Compazine.

For Severe Nausea and Vomiting in Children:

Oral use of Compazine is generally not needed for more than one day.

Children 20 to 29 Pounds: 2.5 mg 1 or 2 times daily. Do not exceed 7.5 mg daily.

Children 30 to 39 Pounds: 2.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg daily.

Children 40 to 85 Pounds: 2.5 mg 3 times daily, or 5 mg 2 times daily. Do not exceed 15 mg daily.

For Psychotic Disorders in Children:

Children 2 to 5 Years: Starting dose is 2.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg on the first day and 20 mg per day thereafter.

Children 6 to 12 Years: Starting dose is 2.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg on the first day and 25 mg per day thereafter.

Elderly patients may require lower doses and more gradual dose adjustments due to increased sensitivity to prochlorperazine.

Precautions

Use Compazine with particular caution if you have hepatic or renal disease, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, severe asthma, cardiovascular disease, or epilepsy. Possible side effect

Serious side effects of prochlorperazine that require prompt medical attention include:

- restlessness, agitation, or an inability to sit still (akathisia);

- high fever, rigid muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, rapid breathing (neuroleptic malignant syndrome);

- fainting or feeling like you might pass out;

- seizures (blackout or convulsions);

- decreased night vision, tunnel vision, watery eyes, increased light sensitivity;

- nausea, stomach pain, skin rash, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes);

- pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, fever, sore throat, flu-like symptoms;

- decreased urination or inability to urinate;

- joint pain or swelling with fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, chest pain;

- slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting, slow or stopped breathing.

Less serious side effects may include:

- dizziness, drowsiness, mild anxiety;

- sleep problems (insomnia), unusual dreams;

- dry mouth, nasal congestion;

- blurred vision, constipation;

- breast swelling or discharge, missed menstrual period;

- weight gain, swelling in hands or feet;

- sexual dysfunction;

- mild itching or skin rash, headache.

If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking Compazine and consult your doctor as soon as possible.



Drug interaction

Compazine may interact with a variety of medications including other CNS depressants, anticholinergic drugs, lithium, anticonvulsants, and blood pressure medications. Missed dose

Overdose

Symptoms of Compazine overdose may include dry mouth, constipation, bloating or stomach cramps, extreme drowsiness or restlessness and agitation, changes in heart rate, fever, and fainting. If you experience any of these symptoms or suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.



Storage

Store Compazine at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Keep away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Store out of reach of children and pets.
