Pharmacological Properties
Carodyl Chewable belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), specifically formulated as palatable chewable tablets for veterinary use in dogs. The active ingredient carprofen exhibits potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. Its mechanism of action is associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, resulting in reduced prostaglandin synthesis — the key chemical mediators involved in pain signaling, inflammation, and fever. Carprofen demonstrates preferential COX-2 inhibitory activity, which contributes to its favorable gastrointestinal safety profile compared to non-selective NSAIDs. Carodyl Chewable is one of the most widely prescribed veterinary NSAIDs for canine pain management worldwide.
After oral administration, carprofen is rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations typically reached within one to three hours. It is highly bound to plasma proteins (over 99%), metabolized primarily in the liver through glucuronidation and oxidation, and excreted mainly via feces and, to a lesser extent, urine. The pharmacokinetic profile of carprofen supports convenient once- or twice-daily dosing for sustained pain relief in dogs.
Indications for Use
Carodyl Chewable is indicated for the relief of inflammation and pain associated with acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs, including osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease, and other painful joint and skeletal conditions. It is also widely used for the control of postoperative pain and inflammation following orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures. The chewable tablet format makes administration easy and stress-free for both dogs and their owners. Buy Carodyl Chewable online for proven, veterinarian-recommended canine pain management. This product is intended for use in dogs only.
Contraindications
Do not use Carodyl Chewable in animals with known hypersensitivity to carprofen or other NSAIDs. This veterinary anti-inflammatory is contraindicated in dogs with active gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, severe hepatic (liver) disease, renal (kidney) insufficiency, or cardiac impairment. Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolemic, or hypotensive animals, as these conditions significantly increase the risk of NSAID-related renal toxicity and gastrointestinal complications. Carodyl Chewable is not recommended for puppies below the manufacturer's specified minimum age (typically six weeks) or for pregnant and lactating dogs unless the attending veterinarian has determined that benefits clearly outweigh the risks and the animal is maintained under close veterinary supervision.
Dosage and Method of Administration
Administer Carodyl Chewable tablets orally according to the dog's body weight and your veterinarian's specific instructions. The typical recommended dose of carprofen is 4.4 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, which may be given as a single daily dose or divided into two equal doses administered approximately 12 hours apart. The palatable chewable tablet formulation is readily accepted by most dogs without the need for food concealment. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or duration of treatment. Provide continuous access to fresh drinking water throughout the treatment period. Follow-up veterinary assessments are recommended for dogs receiving carprofen therapy beyond a few days.
Adverse Reactions
In rare cases, adverse reactions such as vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, soft stools, or lethargy may occur during carprofen therapy, particularly during the initial days of treatment. Very rarely, more serious adverse effects may develop, including gastrointestinal ulceration or hemorrhage, renal dysfunction, hepatotoxicity (liver enzyme elevations or liver failure), or hypersensitivity reactions. If any adverse reactions are observed — particularly dark or bloody stools, persistent vomiting, jaundice (yellowing of eyes or gums), or significant changes in behavior or appetite — discontinue use immediately and consult a veterinarian without delay.
Overdose
Symptoms of carprofen overdose in dogs may include gastrointestinal disturbances (vomiting, diarrhea, GI bleeding), depression, lethargy, and signs of renal or hepatic impairment. In case of suspected overdose, initiate symptomatic and supportive treatment promptly under veterinary supervision. There is no specific antidote for carprofen. Gastrointestinal protectants, activated charcoal (if ingestion was recent), and intravenous fluid therapy may be indicated.
Special Warnings and Precautions
Do not administer Carodyl Chewable concurrently with other NSAIDs or glucocorticoids (corticosteroids), as combination therapy dramatically increases the risk of gastrointestinal toxicity and ulceration. Ensure adequate hydration at all times during treatment. Use with particular caution in elderly, debilitated, or medically compromised animals, as these patients may have increased vulnerability to NSAID-related adverse effects. Veterinary monitoring is strongly recommended during long-term carprofen therapy, including periodic blood work to assess liver and kidney function. Baseline blood work prior to initiating treatment is advisable, especially in older dogs.
