Amiodarone is a powerful antiarrhythmic medication used to treat and prevent serious, potentially life-threatening heart rhythm disorders. This medication is primarily prescribed for ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, and atrial fibrillation — conditions where the heart beats too fast, irregularly, or chaotically, compromising its ability to pump blood effectively.

Drug interaction

Amiodarone has numerous and significant drug interactions that require careful management. It interacts with medications that affect heart rhythm (other antiarrhythmics, including sotalol and flecainide), blood thinning agents (especially warfarin — amiodarone can dramatically increase warfarin levels, requiring dose reduction), and blood pressure medications.

Amiodarone also interacts with digoxin (can increase digoxin levels by up to 70%), statins (increased risk of rhabdomyolysis, especially with simvastatin), certain antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, macrolides), and antidepressants. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are using. Some interactions may require significant dose adjustments or close monitoring of drug levels to prevent potentially dangerous complications.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of amiodarone, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed one. Because amiodarone has a very long half-life (40-55 days), missing a single dose is unlikely to cause an immediate recurrence of arrhythmia, but consistent dosing is still important for maintaining therapeutic drug levels. Try to take your heart rhythm medication at the same time each day to establish a reliable routine.

Overdose

An overdose of amiodarone may cause serious heart problems, such as very slow heartbeat (severe bradycardia), low blood pressure, fainting, or even cardiac arrest. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention right away. Treatment involves continuous cardiac monitoring and supportive care in a hospital setting, as the effects of amiodarone overdose may persist for days due to the drug's extremely long half-life. Never take more than the prescribed dose of this antiarrhythmic medication.

Storage

Store amiodarone at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C), away from heat, direct light, and moisture.
